Rain on the Place de L'Église
Oil on Canvas, 11" x 14"
March, 1998
Probably my best outdoor painting. It rarely rained in Moustiers, so when there was a wet day in February, I rushed out to see what I could paint. I had to wait for another three weeks, until it rained again, to be able to finish the picture.
This is the main square in Moustiers, with its two stately plane trees. I particularly love plane trees for the way their bark turns into a vivid yellow/grey/green camouflage pattern when they are wet. Plane trees line practically every road in southern France and are usually bone white, so a passing rain shower completely transforms the landscape.
