Electric Fireplace With Skull

Oil on Canvas, 15" x 15"

October, 1997

This is a found composition, like almost all of my other still lifes. The small house I rented on the Isle of Skye had a lovely faux-coal electric fireplace, complete with black plastic coals and flickering flame effect. The lamb skull was something I'd found out in the pasture a day earlier; the two glasses sadly contain only tea.

I spent most of my evenings in Scotland in front of this fireplace, the only source of heat in the little house, reading magazines and listening to the radio. Nighttime would be a long ordeal of filling hot water bottles, shuttling them upstairs, and then waiting for the bed to get warm enough to be able to go up and sleep. Morning involved a chilly descent to the main room, where the first thing I did was flip this sucker on.

There's a (sold) contemporaneous still life of just the two tea glasses, but I don't have any photos of it.
